Lean Training Provides Transformative Results at Horsch

Horsch LLC

Horsch Maschinen GmbH (Horsch) is a German-based agriculture equipment manufacturer founded in 1984. In 2014, Horsch LLC in Mapleton, ND opened operations and is now the North American headquarters. The product lines in Mapleton include high-speed tillage tools, cultivators, seeders, precision planters, and sprayers.

Horsch’s journey toward Lean practices and collaboration with Impact Dakota was driven by a commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence. The company recognized the need to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and improve overall productivity to stay competitive in the global agricultural machinery market.

A collaborative partnership between Horsch LLC and Impact Dakota was established in 2023 with select leadership within Horsch LLC attending and completing Impact Dakota’s Lean 101 Training.

The successes that have occurred following the training sessions, for five employees, include but are not limited to three ideas for improvements. Separation and creation of a subassembly area where smaller assemblies are completed offline and ahead of time to increase the flow through the main lines. Within the subassembly area, a specific, high complexity, high frequency assembly line was created with parts and tools staged at point of use and with parts replenished from outside of the working areas. These improvements have led to a reduction in waste such as: excess motion, transportation, waiting, and inventory.

The implementation of stand-up morning meetings has increased communication within the teams, and continuous improvement activities are under way to improve the effectiveness of the information shared during those meetings.

Tool boards were also created to present tools in a visual way, and further 5S activities are currently underway to improve those boards. Standard work, process maps, and time studies for the intent of line balancing are also in their early stages.

“Impact Dakota’s Lean training has made a transformative impact on our operations. The hands-on approach and practical simulations have empowered our team to implement Lean principles effectively. We’ve seen significant improvements in efficiency, organization, and overall productivity. The training has not only enhanced our processes, but it also fostered a culture of continuous improvement. We plan to collaborate with Impact Dakota again in the future and would highly recommend their services to any organization looking to optimize their operations and achieve sustainable growth.”
